Internet Scam Check: Part 2

Now that we have covered the types of scams, we will tell you what you can do if you find yourself being scammed, and how you can report the scam and fight back.

Before you do anything.  Be sure it is a scam.  Otherwise, you may just be taking away somebody’s livelihood because you made a mistake, and that would be a terrible thing.

Once you are sure, there are different outlets to report the scam to.  Do not go it alone.  There are online forums, which may be helpful in identifying scams, but they are not to be relied upon for reporting scams.  Rather you can report the business to the Better Business Bureau.  They may not be able to help you, but this can help prevent others in the future from being hurt by scammers.  Your next step should be your State Attorney General’s Office (For Example,Ohio has a website dedicated to reporting Scams – http://www.ohioattorneygeneral.gov/ReportaScam).  This can also be a first step but it is always a way to protect yourself and ensure that if you truly were scammed that justice can be served.

Scams can and always will happen, as they are an unfortunate reality in the world we live in.  Be sure to check, double-check, anything that seems fishy to you.  Even if you end up being wrong, and the potential scam, is helpful to you, being safe is always a smart idea.  If possible, call up the company you believe scammed you.  An error could have been made.

Remember to be smart, but also be aware that not everybody is out to get you.  What is most important to know is that the government authorities are your smartest and safest bet when reporting a scam.
