Smishing: Avoid Those Strange Texts!

Most of us have heard about “phishing”, which is a way that a scammer can obtain your information through the use of fake emails or blind links that require you to fill out personal information. Smishing is the same principal except over your phone through a text message or SMS message. These “smishing” scams are harder to combat because the smart phone is a relatively new idea. Scammers are everywhere and they will not stop until they get your personal data!

Smishing may occur if you fill our forms online, sign up for services, or even enter a raffle. They could also occur randomly. The text would tell you to either visit a webpage that you would have to enter your data into for “verification” or it would direct you to a site on your phone where you can fill in the same data. Either way, you would be losing out on some personal information. Smishing is the new thing that scammers are doing to get your personal data so they have steal your identity. They could even just dial in your number at random just to see what you would do.

You can avoid this scam by just ignoring your text and by also contacting your cell phone provider to have them either block the number, report them, or take you off that organization that is using your number falsely. Just remember to ignore anything that you think could be potentially harmful and remember not to fall for that kind of ruse.
